Background

Seventeen thousand articles deep.

The Knockturnal is a New York entertainment, culture, and lifestyle publication founded in 2015, with a roster of more than 50 writers covering premieres, festivals, and celebrity events. Ten years of daily publishing built an archive of over 17,000 articles. For a media company, traffic is the business: the site earns through ads and sponsored campaigns, so every technical defect multiplies across thousands of URLs.

The Audit

One critical defect, hiding on every major page.

Our audit ran in two passes. April surfaced eight prioritized findings, and the critical one was a single line of markup on the homepage and all 23 category pages telling Google that the stripped-down AMP shells were the real pages. The May deep audit put numbers on the rest: 85 scripts on the homepage, a main stylesheet that was 96 percent dead code, a 54.8 KB logo squeezed into a 375 pixel slot, and a mobile Lighthouse score of 61 with a 5.4 second first contentful paint.

The Honest Call

We advised against the rebuild we could have pitched.

A full headless rebuild was on the table at $50K to $100K. The data said no: the publication was growing 17 percent year over year and the foundation was worth keeping. So we recommended the smaller engagement, a focused technical SEO and performance program, and committed to putting every finding, every fix, and every correction in writing. Later, when bulk-converting the 209,502-image back catalog turned out to cost the client more in storage than it would return in speed, we cancelled that line item too.

The Fixes

Surgical changes, verified live, zero regressions.

We retired the broken AMP setup with one plugin deactivation and a single regex 301, then rebuilt the corrupted canonical cache across the homepage and all 23 categories. Render-blocking stylesheets went from 29 to 1. We noindexed the firehose archive that funneled 14,397 posts into Google's index, plus a 351-post junk category, moved new uploads to WebP, and cut the site logo 92 percent, from 54.8 KB to 4.5 KB. Every change was verified logged-out and kept reversible.

The Field Data

The lab said 80. Real users said otherwise.

The morning we reported a 13-point lab gain, Chrome field data arrived showing real visitors still failing Core Web Vitals with a 2.7 second server response. The cause: a cache that flushed every 10 hours, leaving the 17,000-article archive perpetually cold at roughly 3 seconds per page versus 0.2 warm. One setting change, 10 hours to 7 days, and we published the correction in our own report to the client.

The Result

Faster than every competitor we benchmarked.

Five weeks from baseline, in the lab: mobile Lighthouse 61 to 80, first contentful paint 5.4 to 1.3 seconds, blocking time 160 ms down to roughly 12 ms. Those scores now beat Complex, Vibe, Hypebeast, and Highsnobiety. Early search signals moved the right way too: average position 10.3 to 9.2 across matched 28-day windows, 8.7 in the latest week. Early, and we said so. The field-data verdict arrives with the next Chrome UX report, and it will be published the same way everything else was: honestly.
