Google Local Services Ads (LSA) are the results at the very top of the search page for trades like plumbing, roofing, HVAC, and concrete work. They show your business name, review rating, and a green Google Guaranteed badge, and you pay when a customer calls or messages you, not when someone clicks.
That is the core difference from regular Google Ads. Google Ads charge per click, work for any business, and give you full control over keywords, ad copy, and landing pages. LSA charges per lead, sits above everything else on the page, and is limited to eligible local trades, with almost no control over the message. Different tools, and most trades should eventually run both.
The pay-per-lead model sounds simple, and Google markets it as set-and-forget. In practice, unmanaged LSA accounts bleed money in three specific ways:
- You get charged for junk leads (wrong service, wrong area, spam calls) that Google will refund, but only if someone disputes them inside the dispute window.
- Your ranking drops because responsiveness, review velocity, and profile completeness slip, and lower rank means fewer and worse leads.
- Nobody connects LSA leads to booked jobs, so budget decisions are made off Google's lead count instead of your revenue.
Closing those three gaps is the ongoing work of the channel. Most large agencies barely mention it; we do it daily.
